What is Povidone-Iodine?

MANY USES OF POVIDONE-IODINE IN SOLUTION FORM

Povidone-iodine, also known as iodopovidone, is an antiseptic used in both medical settings and at home. In hospitals, professionals use Povidone-Iodine to cleanse the skin of healthcare providers before and after surgery as well as the skin of the person they are caring for. Individuals also use it for minor wounds such as cuts, scratches, and scrapes.

In 1955, H.A. Shelanski and M.V. Shelanski discovered povidone iodine. It is less toxic than iodine, which has been in use since 1811. PVP-I is toxic to bacteria, yeast, molds, fungi, and protozoans. The PVP-I advantages over iodine include less irritation at the site of application, less toxicity, and less staining of surrounding tissues.

Skin

Cleanse skin before and after surgery. Recent skin tests reveal that povidone iodine has strikingly low cytotoxicity levels compared to other antiseptics.

Cleanse

Scrub the hands of healthcare workers. Povidone iodine is an excellent, safe, natural antiseptic that works in a wide range of applications for wound care and wound cleaning. Povidone iodine is a powerful antiseptic that is great to use on cuts, scrapes, skin infections, and deeper wounds.

Wounds

Used for minor wounds. Povidone iodine is an effective antiseptic that does not impede wound healing. Povidone iodine is bactericidal against Gram-positive and -negative organisms. No acquired bacterial resistance or cross-resistance has been reported for iodine. Povidone iodine aids healing in a range of acute and chronic wounds.

Ulcers

Used in wound care clinics to heal pressure and traumatic ulcers. Using the same local povidone-iodine (Betadine) treatment with compression bandages is more effective (82%) for ulcus healing than without compression therapy (62%).

Surgery

Used in hand surgery clinics to treat and prevent infections. Betadine Surgical Scrub (7.5% povidone-iodine) is a bactericidal/virucidal sudsing skin cleanser for reducing microorganisms before surgery or patient care.

Eyes

Used in Eyedrops (as in neonates) as a cleanser and as a lubricating agent in artificial tears. Povidone-Iodine is the standard of care for cleansing the eye during anti-VEGF injection procedures.

Advantages over triple antibiotic ointment (TAO) in ointment form.

AVAILABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY OF DR. RADOW'S

Safe Use of a Common Antiseptic. When povidone is combined with iodine, we commonly use it as an antiseptic for the skin (e.g., Betadine), but also for less concentrated forms for the eyes and vagina. Surgeons also use it to cleanse skin before surgery. Individuals use the 10% solution most often to cleanse the skin, but it also comes in diluted concentrations as low as 0.3%.

You will find Povidone in both medical settings and among household items. It’s possible to experience mild symptoms with large ingestions. Povidone-iodine is a common antiseptic that cleanses the skin, eyes, and vagina. Upon usage, povidone-iodine can bring about mild side effects. It can also cause difficult problems if used incorrectly.
